Technology and an understanding of design processes enables people to manage, interpret, shape and alter their environment to improve their quality of life at home, in the workplace and in the broader community. The rapid rate of technological change in society highlights the need for technological capability, innovative thinking and flexibility.
Technology education integrates both procedural and conceptual knowledge. Students identify needs that have personal meaning, apply design theory and use design processes that encourage flexibility, resourcefulness and imagination in the development and production of functional solutions.
Students learn about technologies and use a range of materials, tools and techniques relevant to the personal, commercial and global areas of human activity. Technologies assume increased importance when they are applied to solve real problems and to create ideas and solutions for customers or clients or in responses to needs and opportunities. They can be used to add functional, aesthetic and financial value to products.
The Beverly Hills Girls High School Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) Key Learning Area (KLA) offers a diverse range of subjects in the Applied Science area covering stages 4 – 6 (Years 7 – 12). In addition to the mainstream TAS subjects of Technology Mandatory, Food Technology, Textiles and Design and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) there is the delivery of the VET courses, Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) and Information and Digital Technology (IDT). The strong commitment to the delivery of VET will see the school receive an upgrade of the facilities to a Trade Skills Centre for Hospitality in 2015. This Trade Skills Centre will feature a full Commercial Kitchen and Food Service area for Hospitality.
