Languages

Fact: Only 6% of the world’s population speaks English as a first language.

Fact: Only 18% speaks English as a second language.

Fact: That leaves 75% of the world’s population that don’t speak a word of English!

Why we learn languages

Why learn a language? If you want to improve your employment prospects, your literacy skills in English, your ability to communicate with the rest of the world and even earn bonus entry points to some universities, then studying a language is of vital importance to you.

Beverly Hills Girls High School is unique in that the Languages Department offers 4 languages for study at the school:  Chinese, French, Modern Greek and Italian.

Students can study these languages from Year 7 through to Year 12. In the senior school students can elect to study a variety of courses either Beginner, Continuer, Heritage or Background Speaker.

The Languages Faculty believes in giving our students the best possible experiences in their learning:

We have highly trained, very experienced, native speaker teachers and well equipped classrooms that can give our students real experiences in language learning. Our students use all forms of technology to access the latest audio and visual resources from across the world to maximise their language learning experience.

We make learning meaningful by having relevant excursions which engage students and make the language learning a life-long memorable experience. Culturally and linguistically relevant excursions range from visits to local venues such as patisseries or restaurants, to the formal study of languages in an international context through the school’s well established overseas study program. Since 1997 the school has conducted 27 overseas excursions to countries including China, France, Greece and Italy. The school has an 18 year sister school relationship with San Bellarmino Linguistics High School in Montepulciano, Tuscany. Students from this school are hosted by students from our school every second year. The school is currently working on establishing a sister school in China.

Language students have also achieved excellent results at the HSC including first in the state in Chinese Continuers.
