Young Women at Beverly Hills Girls High School are encouraged to engage in higher-order critical thinking and creative problem-solving whilst using appropriate technology to develop themselves into 21st Century Learners. Students develop their skills to be able to make informed choices and responsible decisions as individuals and members of the community. Our aim is to make Science accessible to all and as exciting and enjoyable as possible while facilitating students to achieve to their potential. Students work individually and in teams to plan and conduct investigations, critically analyse data and information, evaluate scientific issues and solve problems. Through our day to day teaching, considerable emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy and the development of students' questioning skills.
BHGHS has eight very experienced science teachers, many of whom are current HSC markers. There are six refurbished 'state of the art' Science Laboratories equipped with data projectors, banks of laptop computers and an extensive range of the latest educational DVD's. Every type of experimental apparatus and equipment necessary for the large range of investigations students will carry out is available.
Excursions and competitions are an important aspect of Science at BHGHS. Students do activities at Taronga Park Zoo, the Australian Museum, the Botanic Gardens, the Power House Museum, the IMAX theatre, ANSTO, Wollongong Science Centre, as well as taking part in Forensic Science incursions, the Surfing Scientist incursion and Science in the City during Science Week. Students will be addressed by a number of guest speakers throughout the year, both live and via video conference.
Students at BHGHS have many opportunities to extend themselves. Students compete in many competitions and attend external activities including: University of New South Wales ICAS Science Competition, RACI Chemistry Competition, University of Sydney Brain Bee Competition – Neuroscience (Year 10 students), Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Year 11 students), University of Sydney Gifted and Talented Competition (Year 9 students), Youth Science Forum, Stellar astronomy scholarship, Siemens Summer Science School (Year 9 students) and the Victor Chang Science Award (Year 11 students).
Last year one of our year 10 students came equal 4th in the NSW Finals of the Australian Brain Bee competition. This year we improved on this success with a second place!
