Mathematics

At Beverly Hills Girls High School, the staff within our Mathematics faculty are all very experienced teachers with fantastic skill, understanding and depth of knowledge. We are passionate, work in a constructive team environment, and are committed to the school motto: women can do anything.

Our teachers teach the DEC NSW courses for Stage 4, 5 and 6 and offer all levels within those stages where appropriate. The syllabus for years 7-10 we teach are in line with the Board of Studies as are the HSC level courses where we teach both the general and the advanced HSC Maths syllabuses as well.

As our world progresses through technological leaps and bounds, mathematical literacy is becoming an increasingly necessary skill for the 21st century. This is evident in looking as society and how the educated shopper pays more attention to mortgage loans and rates, superannuation, foreign exchange rates, taxes, fee calculations and even simple purchases.

Aside from financial literacy however, most modern jobs (such as marketing, public relations, teaching, human resources) have had a creeping necessity to be able to calculate risk, study statistical data, make conclusions, study trends, and then use spreadsheets and charts effectively as tools to formulate this information from raw data.

Mathematics is also a pivotal skill to have in Information Technology, economics, politics and law, but more impressively: it is commonly agreed that more than two thirds of today’s students will work in jobs that do not even exist yet! Although we may not be certain what jobs they may have, we can be certain that mathematical ability will increasingly be required in these evolutionary roles. To this end our teachers understand it is important to prepare our young women for their future career paths and most importantly: we want to make sure they can work out as much of it as possible in their head, if only to recognise when technology is failing them.

In terms of more specific skills, we challeng our students to think critically, to solve problems and develop their investigative skills. This can be seen in the photos on this page, where students have been asked to solve real worl problems in a practical environment. We also offer extra support for students such as the Pi Rates program where peer mentoring and lunch time homework support is offered to students. Our students also participate in Maths competitions, World of Maths day, Pi day and Math week where activities and events take place to encourage interest in mathematics.

We care at Beverly Hills Girls High. We have a vision for the future of our students. Our teachers are dedicated to ensuring each student achieves her best.

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:
