Within our present day society, there is a very real need to equip high school students for life at post- secondary level. This need is well recognised and accepted by governments, education systems, business and the community in general.
At Beverly Hills Girls High School comprehensive and innovative careers education and careers counselling is an integral component of transforming our school belief, Women Can Do Anything into lifelong outcomes for our students.
The school has a qualified Careers Adviser who provides careers advice and current career information to all students. The Careers Education Program aims to equip each student with the knowledge, skills and understanding and attitudes that will enable them to successfully embark upon a personal careers path that is realistic, achievable and personally satisfying.
Students in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 learn about career options, further education, applying for a job, the nature of the workplace and employee rights and obligations. The Career Adviser works with teachers to provide opportunities for students to identify and explore their interests, develop self-confidence and gain employment related skills.
The school has a Careers Room which is used for classes and seminars and is open at recess and lunchtime. It houses:
- Resources for students to take away
- Computers for student use
- Careers Adviser’s office
- References for student use
- Classroom and study space
A Subject Selection Program Year 10 into Year 11 which includes a Parent Information Evening is coordinated by the Careers Adviser. All Year 10 students are interviewed to help them make the most suitable subject choices for Years 11 and 12. All students in Year 10 complete a pathways and transition exit plan to assist their career pathway choice.
Individual career counselling interviews are scheduled for all Year 12 students giving students opportunity to develop their knowledge of careers and courses and tertiary studies pathways exit plan. Individual career counselling is available to students on request in other years.
The DEC School to Work (STW) Program requires students to comprehensively plan for post school education and the world of work. All careers-based activities contribute to the student’s individual student pathway exit plan.
Practical assistance is given for employment and study related matters such as job, course and scholarship applications, cadetships, part time jobs, time management and interview preparation.
The School provides a Work experience program for all Year 10 students, as well as for select students in Years 9, 11 and 12. Along with the highly successful work experience program the Careers Adviser uses her large network of employers and tertiary education / institutional contacts to offer a large variety of exciting programs to build on employment related skills and community service learning / volunteering. Students in Years 9 and 10 are encouraged to participate in Service learning / community student volunteering programs organised by the school and to register in the NSW DEC Student Volunteering Awards Program.
Careers excursions are organised for students in years 9 – 12 to attend careers expos / workshops linking to KLA and careers. Guest speakers from a wide variety of careers and tertiary institutions are invited to talk to Years 10 to 12 students at lunchtimes.
Students are also given opportunity to study TAFE delivered VET courses (TVET) for students in years 11 & 12 offered at TAFE NSW institutes as part of their HSC. TAFE prevocational courses are offered to some students not making a successful transition through, and from school, to further education and employment. The Careers Adviser also assists students in Year 11 to obtain School Based Traineeship / Apprenticeships to be studied as part of their HSC pattern of study.
